    • Four of the ten programs are free (UNIQ, European Space Camp, NYU ARISE, UIUC Young Scholars) and EDT costs under £600 with bursaries. All five are restricted by residency or nationality: UK state schools, scholarship-sponsor countries, New York City, seven US states, UK schools.
    • Engineering is the subject where the lab placements are longest: NYU ARISE runs ten weeks and UIUC six, both paid. The commercial residentials run one to two weeks.
    • Only Plaksha and Reach Cambridge publish an explicit welcome to international students alongside an age range that reaches 14; MSU admits international students from grade 10.
    • Provider-confirmed 2027 dates exist for InvestIN, Reach Cambridge, EDT, MSU and Oxbridge Academic Programs. UNIQ, ARISE, UIUC and European Space Camp publish 2027 dates between October and December.

Engineering Development Trust (Insight into University)

    Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best University-Based Experience

EDT's Insight into University courses are four and five-day summer schools at UK universities in which Year 12 students live in halls, attend lectures and laboratory sessions, complete a group project and earn an Industrial Cadets Silver Award. It suits UK sixth-formers deciding between engineering degrees who want to test a specific course at a specific university for under £600. It was shortlisted because the award is a recognised industry accreditation, and the 2027 line-up, confirmed to us by EDT, includes Materials Science at Oxford and Engineering and Physical Sciences at Lincoln, where students build and programme an obstacle-avoiding Arduino buggy. Two EDT supervisors stay with each course at all times.

    European Space Camp

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Most Innovative Curriculum

European Space Camp puts 24 students at Andøya Space, the world's northernmost permanent rocket range, for a week that ends with the participants launching a sounding rocket carrying instruments they have built and programmed themselves. It suits 17 to 20-year-olds with high-school physics and mathematics who want to run a real rocket campaign rather than simulate one. It was shortlisted because the launch is the curriculum: students split into payload, sensor and telemetry groups and each runs part of the live countdown. Attendance is free, with every seat funded by a scholarship.

    Points to consider

Most scholarship seats are tied to a nationality or sponsoring organisation; only the single European Space Camp seat and the ESA seats are open to applicants from anywhere, and travel is not always covered. The camp is run largely by volunteer alumni.

    InvestIN Education

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best for Career Exploration

InvestIN's Engineer Summer Experience is a one or two-week career programme at UCL and across London industry sites, with students spending some days at engineering employers rather than in a classroom, giving them real-world career experiences. It suits 15 to 18-year-olds who want to find out what engineers actually do day to day before committing to the degree. It was shortlisted because the two-week version ends with a Level 3 Award in Work Experience and Career Planning worth eight UCAS points, a recognised qualification rather than a certificate of attendance. Contact hours are published for every option, from 25 to 65.

    Points to consider

The Level 3 Award applies only to two-week bookings, not the one-week option. InvestIN's separate 12 to 14 programme is a general Career Discovery course at Dulwich College with an engineering strand, not an engineering programme.

Michigan State University College of Engineering (HSEI)

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best for International Students

The High School Engineering Institute is a one-week residential at Michigan State in which each day is spent on one engineering major with a faculty member, a graduate student and an undergraduate, through short lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities and tours. It suits students entering grades 10 to 12 who want a quick, structured survey of engineering disciplines before choosing one. It was shortlisted because MSU states the programme is open to both US and international students, which most US university engineering camps do not, at a published price of $1,199. NYU Tandon Center for K12 STEM Education (ARISE)

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best for Research

ARISE is a ten-week programme that front-loads four weeks of evening remote workshops before placing students in NYU research labs for six weeks, ending with a poster symposium at the American Museum of Natural History. It suits New York City students in grades 10 and 11 who want a paid research placement and are prepared to do the groundwork first. It was shortlisted because of that design: students arrive in the lab already trained, then spend roughly 150 hours across more than 80 NYU labs. Participation is free and every student receives a $2,000 stipend.

    Oxbridge Academic Programs (WorldStrides)

    Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best University-Based Experience

The Cambridge Tradition places students in Jesus College, Cambridge for two or four weeks, with the Engineering course ending in a model engineering project of the student's own design. It suits students in grades 10 to 12 who want the Cambridge college experience with a genuine choice of depth, from a single fortnight to the combined 28-day session. It was shortlisted because it offers that range inside the college system, with a materials fee that reflects something being built rather than only discussed. Programme directors and deans live in the residences and every residence has 24/7 security.

    Plaksha University (Young Technology Scholars)

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Most Innovative Curriculum

Young Technology Scholars is a two-week residential at Plaksha University in which students first work through a common exploration phase and then choose one of three tracks spanning robotics, bioengineering and data science. It suits students in classes 9 to 12 who have not yet settled on a branch of engineering and want to try several before choosing. It was shortlisted because of that explore-then-specialise structure and because Plaksha's FAQ tells applicants not to prepare: everything needed is taught during the two weeks. Faculty are drawn from institutions including MIT, Cornell, Berkeley, Imperial and the IITs, and the fee is subsidised by the university's foundation.

    Reach Cambridge

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best for International Students

Reach Cambridge runs engineering summer school in two-week blocks that stack into four and six-week stays, with students housed in a University of Cambridge college and taught for 20 hours a week. It suits students travelling from outside the UK, for whom a single fortnight rarely justifies the flight, and who want to combine engineering with a second or third subject. It was shortlisted because the stackable structure is built for exactly that student, and the fee includes international travel insurance alongside accommodation, meals and excursions. Reach Cambridge is accredited by the British Accreditation Council and states all staff are DBS checked.

WYSE, Grainger College of Engineering (University of Illinois)

Guide 3 of 10 · Engineering · Recognised as Best for Research

Young Scholars places 30 high school students in Grainger College of Engineering faculty labs for six weeks, working 30 to 35 hours a week on research alongside graduate students, postdocs and medical students. It suits students from the seven eligible Midwestern states who want a full-time research placement with no cost and a fellowship payment. It was shortlisted because the depth is unusual for high school research: a six-week, near full-time placement, with the university stating over 600 applications for 30 places in 2022 and 2023. Students are paired with another participant and sometimes a teacher from their own school.

Only students living in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Iowa or Wisconsin can apply, and the programme states plainly that it is regionally focused and does not accept international applicants. Safeguarding is covered by the University of Illinois's Protection of Minors policy rather than a programme-specific statement.

    What this means

An engineering summer program for high school students is a residential or hybrid course, usually one to ten weeks, in which a 13 to 18-year-old builds, tests or researches something rather than studying engineering theory. The ten organisations here fall into three types. Research placements (NYU ARISE, UIUC Young Scholars) put students in university labs for six to ten weeks, pay them, and are restricted to local or regional residents. Access residentials (UNIQ, EDT, European Space Camp) are free or under £600, run for a week, and select on background, year group or nationality. Commercial and university-run residentials (InvestIN, Oxbridge Academic Programs, Reach Cambridge, Plaksha, MSU) are open enrolment, cost from $1,199 for a week to £6,995 for two, and are the only group that admits students below Year 12 or grade 10.

The decision for most families is therefore set by eligibility before quality. A UK Year 12 at a state school should look at UNIQ and EDT first. A US student in New York or the Midwest has a free, paid lab placement available. Everyone else is choosing among paid programmes, where contact hours and class size, listed here wherever published, matter more than the host university's name.

How organisations are included and assessed

    Inclusion criteria

The gate. An organisation appears only if it meets all five.

    1. 1

Runs a program for students under 18

Runs a program for students under 18 in the coming summer cycle, open to school-age students rather than undergraduates.

    2. 2

Publishes its fee and what the fee covers

Publishes its fee and what the fee covers, so the full cost is visible before application.

    3. 3

States who teaches and in what setting

States who teaches and in what setting: the staff category, and the venue the program actually uses.

    4. 4

      Publishes safeguarding information for under-18s

Publishes safeguarding information for under-18s that a family can find and read.

    5. 5

Describes the experience without implying an admissions advantage

Describes the experience without implying an admissions advantage, with claims about certification, contact and university outcomes matching what is delivered.

    Assessment criteria

How the included ten are judged, and where each recognition line comes from.

    1. 1

      Teaching substance

Contact hours, group size, and who teaches.

    2. 2

      Access and cost transparency

Whether the full cost is published before application, and whether means-tested places exist and are reachable.

    3. 3

      Practical or applied content

      What a student actually does.

    4. 4

      Honest claims

      Marketing checked against reality.

    5. 5

      Distinctiveness

What this program offers that comparable ones do not.

Safeguarding is recorded as a factual disclosure: we note whether an organisation publishes information a family can find and read. It is never graded or scored by Succeed.

    Frequently asked questions

For a free, fully funded week at a leading university, UNIQ Engineering at Oxford (UK state-school Year 12). For a paid research placement, NYU ARISE (New York City residents) or UIUC Young Scholars (seven Midwestern states). For an international student aged 14 to 18, Reach Cambridge or Plaksha. For a recognised qualification, InvestIN's two-week programme carries a Level 3 Award worth eight UCAS points.

UNIQ Engineering, European Space Camp, NYU ARISE and UIUC Young Scholars charge nothing, and ARISE and Young Scholars pay a stipend or fellowship. Each is restricted: UNIQ to UK state schools, ARISE to New York City, Young Scholars to seven US states, and European Space Camp seats mostly to sponsoring countries. EDT courses cost £240 to £595 with bursaries for eligible UK students.

Options are limited. Reach Cambridge admits from 14 and Plaksha from class 9. InvestIN's engineering programme starts at 15; its 12 to 14 course is a general career programme with an engineering strand. UNIQ, EDT, ARISE, Young Scholars and MSU all start at Year 12 or grade 10, and European Space Camp at 17.

Reach Cambridge, Plaksha, MSU HSEI, Oxbridge Academic Programs and InvestIN all admit international students. European Space Camp is open worldwide but most scholarship seats are nationality-restricted. UNIQ and EDT are for UK school students only, and ARISE and Young Scholars are closed to anyone outside their city or region.

From free to about £6,995 for two weeks. EDT courses are £240 to £595. MSU's one-week institute is $1,199. InvestIN runs from £2,290 for a week as a day student to £7,930 for two weeks residential. Oxbridge Academic Programs is $7,850 per two-week session until 31 December 2026, and Reach Cambridge £6,995 for two weeks or £20,595 for six.

Only InvestIN awards a formal qualification (Level 3, eight UCAS points, two-week option). EDT awards an Industrial Cadets Silver Award. The research placements produce a poster or paper. None of the ten is a route to admission, but all give a student something concrete to write about.

No organisation pays to be included in this guide, and payment has no bearing on selection. Every organisation featured was sent its profile before publication to check for factual errors, not to approve our judgement of it. Succeed has a commercial relationship with some featured organisations and may earn a commission when a student enrols through the platform. Where that applies, it is stated in the profile itself.
