    Junior Scholars Essay Contest summary

Choose one interdisciplinary question and make a clear, research-based argument in formal academic writing.

The strongest entries combine an independent viewpoint with credible evidence, meaningful counterargument and careful structure.

It suits students who enjoy thinking beyond classroom answers and can turn broad ethical or global questions into a focused case.

What is Junior Scholars Essay Contest?

The Junior Scholars Essay Contest is Lumiere Education’s international academic writing competition. Entrants choose one of five questions spanning international intervention, art and social change, dangerous inventions, climate responsibility and space exploration.

Students produce a formal, research-based argumentative essay rather than an original research paper. Entries undergo double-blind review by an Academic Advisory Committee that includes professors and researchers from universities such as Cambridge, Columbia, Brown and Dartmouth.

Why Succeed highlights Junior Scholars Essay Contest

    • Five broad prompts let students connect academic argument with urgent global and ethical questions.

    • The rubric rewards originality, analysis, evidence, structure and polished presentation.

    • Double-blind review is designed to reduce bias linked to an entrant’s identity, affiliation or reputation.

    • Students are encouraged to address counterarguments instead of presenting a one-sided opinion.

    • Past medal-winning essays were published in the Oxford Journal of Student Scholarship.

Who is Junior Scholars Essay Contest for?

    Best for

Curious independent writers who enjoy researching difficult questions, taking a clear position and testing it against competing arguments.

    Not ideal if

You prefer personal storytelling, collaborative work or projects based on primary data rather than formal academic argument.

Is Junior Scholars Essay Contest worth it?

Yes, if you want a structured reason to practise research, argument and academic writing beyond normal schoolwork. The interdisciplinary prompts also make it possible to pursue a question that genuinely interests you rather than forcing every entrant into one subject.

The main limitation is that producing a persuasive 1,000-word essay still requires substantial research and editing, while recognition is competitive. The scholarships are tuition reductions for a separate programme, so their practical value depends on gaining admission and wanting to attend.

How much preparation does Junior Scholars Essay Contest need?

    Effort level

    Moderate to high.

    Best started

Four to six weeks before the submission deadline.

    Main challenge

Turning a broad global question into a focused, defensible position.

    Typical preparation

    • Choose a prompt that creates genuine tension rather than an obvious answer.

    • Research competing positions before committing to your thesis.

    • Draft early enough to test the logic, strengthen evidence and remove unsupported claims.

    • Leave a final editing session for structure, citations, grammar and the word limit.

    Useful if

You want evidence of independent academic thinking.
