This is an introduction to anthropological archaeology through the objects and structures people leave behind. It connects archaeological theory and methods with questions about human history.
Students examine global case studies and consider heritage preservation, Indigenous rights and gender equality. The undergraduate classroom experience suits students who want to test their interest in archaeology through serious academic study.
Archaeology: Unearthing History is Northwestern University’s ANTHRO 214-0 course, offered through its College Preparation Program. It introduces anthropological archaeology by examining how material remains help researchers interpret past human lives. Students study archaeological history, theory and methods through case studies from different regions and historical periods.
The course connects research design, excavation and materials analysis with contemporary political and social questions. Topics include heritage preservation, Indigenous rights, environmental justice and gender equity. College Prep students join an undergraduate classroom alongside Northwestern and visiting university students.
The course explains how archaeologists build arguments from evidence, giving students a clearer understanding of the discipline’s methods.
Global case studies broaden the focus beyond famous monuments and familiar historical periods.
Heritage preservation, Indigenous rights and gender equality connect the study of the past with present-day responsibilities.
Studying alongside university students offers a direct test of undergraduate academic expectations.
College credit provides a tangible academic outcome beyond subject exploration.
Students interested in archaeology, anthropology or history who want to understand how researchers interpret material evidence and engage with ethical questions.
You mainly want a recreational summer experience or expect participation to guarantee university admission; this is an undergraduate academic course.
This course is worth considering if you want to test whether archaeology interests you as an academic discipline. Its combination of methods, global case studies and contemporary debates offers more depth than a general introduction to ancient civilizations. The undergraduate classroom and college credit strengthen its academic value.
The substantial financial commitment makes subject interest and readiness for college-level work important deciding factors. Credit transfer depends on the receiving institution, and participation does not guarantee admission to Northwestern. International students should also account for the additional course enrollment generally required for F-1 study.
