The UK Mathematics Trust runs a collaborative challenge focused on mathematical dexterity, teamwork and clear communication.
Teams tackle starter questions before four competitive formats: Group, Crossnumber, Shuttle and Relay.
It suits confident problem-solvers who enjoy explaining ideas, checking teammates’ reasoning and working accurately under pressure.
The Team Maths Challenge is a UK Mathematics Trust competition that develops mathematical dexterity through collaborative problem-solving. Pupils represent their schools and compete with other teams in their region.
At Regional Finals, participants warm up with starter questions before completing the Group, Crossnumber, Shuttle and Relay rounds. The varied formats reward teams that can divide work intelligently, communicate methods and check answers together.
Four distinct rounds test more than routine individual calculation.
The format makes mathematical communication and teamwork central to performance.
Free past papers give teams a practical way to understand the round formats.
Regional winners can progress to an invite-only National Final.
Pupils who enjoy collaborative problem-solving and can explain mathematical reasoning clearly to teammates.
You prefer individual competition or cannot enter through an eligible UK school and registered UKMT centre.
Yes, for pupils who want a structured test of collaborative mathematics rather than another individual paper. The four-round format creates useful practice in communicating methods, dividing tasks and staying accurate under pressure.
The main limitation is access: entry is school-led, restricted to one team per centre and therefore depends on selection by a coordinator. Progression also rests on team performance at a single regional event, so the experience matters more than relying on a particular result.
Effort level
Moderate to high.
Best started
Begin several weeks before the regional event.
Main challenge
Sharing work without losing track of accuracy.
Download a past paper and learn how each round works.
Practise assigning roles and explaining intermediate steps aloud.
Run timed sessions, then review where communication or checking failed.
Useful if
Your team can practise together using past papers.

Your school coordinator purchases a team ticket through the UKMT Portal.
The four pupils arrive at the host school and receive their team number.
The team uses starter questions to prepare for the scored activities.
You compete in the Group, Crossnumber, Shuttle and Relay rounds.
