Purple Comet! Math Meet
About Purple Comet! Math Meet
Purple Comet! Math Meet is a free, annual, international online team mathematics competition for middle and high school students. Held every year since 2003, it gives teams of one to six students a ten-day window in which to complete a timed contest, and it is run by AwesomeMath.
Teaching style
Collaborative, timed problem-solving. Students work in teams on problems ranging from fairly easy to extremely challenging, combining divided work with joint problem solving while relying on their own mathematical methods.
Reputation & Succeed take
An established international mathematics contest held annually since 2003. In 2025 it reported participation from over 12,000 students on over 4,000 teams across 80 countries.
Our take
A strong option for middle- and high-school students who enjoy challenging mathematics, teamwork and international competition without an entry fee. The flexible ten-day participation window and remote-team support make it accessible to schools, clubs, homeschoolers and mixed teams.
Purple Comet combines several distinctive features: it is free, international, online and team-based; it offers separate middle- and high-school contests; and teams choose a convenient start time within a ten-day window.
Who this provider suits
Who should choose them
Students who enjoy collaborative mathematical problem solving should consider it, particularly middle- and high-school teams from schools, homeschool settings, mathematics clubs or mixed-school groups. It also suits teams needing a flexible online schedule or members competing from different locations.
Who it may not suit
It may not suit students seeking an instructor-led or primarily individual contest experience, or participants motivated by high-value prizes. The event is designed around team collaboration, supervisors cannot help solve problems, and awards are mainly certificates.
