Leadership Institute combines study of social issues with practical leadership development. Its central project is an Action Plan for making a meaningful contribution to your school or community.
Expect discussion, collaborative problem-solving and reflection on how you lead. It suits students who want to move from caring about an issue to planning a realistic response.
Leadership Institute is Brown University’s pre-college program for exploring social justice through collaborative leadership. Students choose an interdisciplinary course and investigate issues such as civic engagement, gender equity, educational access and intercultural communication. Participation is through a campus course or a separate online course.
The experience combines academic discussion with public speaking, active listening and teamwork. With guidance from instructors and Teaching Associates, students develop an Action Plan with realistic goals and present it to peers. The aim is to connect classroom learning with a useful contribution to a school or community.
The Action Plan gives students a concrete way to connect academic ideas with community work.
Leadership practice includes listening, teamwork and problem-solving alongside public speaking.
Instructor and Teaching Associate support helps students set realistic goals and anticipate obstacles.
The online option combines independent study with scheduled workshops and individual instructor support.
Students interested in social issues who want to practice collaborative leadership and develop a practical community project.
You want college credit, a direct advantage in Brown undergraduate admission or a lightly scheduled summer activity.
The strongest reason to choose Leadership Institute is the combination of subject exploration and a community-focused capstone. Students who already care about an issue can use instructor guidance to turn broad ambitions into realistic goals. Its value depends on engaging fully with discussion, reflection and project work.
The financial commitment is substantial, and the program is non-credit. Brown also says Pre-College is not a prospecting program for undergraduate admission. Compare the learning experience and support with alternatives, rather than treating the university name as an admissions outcome.
