Brown's STEM 9/10 combines advanced academic study with laboratory or field exercises, team research and design challenges. Students develop a project and explain their work in a final presentation.
The residential experience pairs independence with close structure: live-in staff, supervised activities and project time support both learning and everyday college-life skills.
It suits students who enjoy working with others and want to test their interest in STEM through practical work rather than formal grades.
STEM for Rising 9th and 10th Graders is Brown University's residential pre-college program focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students choose a course that combines rigorous academic content with laboratory or field exercises and a research project or design challenge.
Learning is practical and collaborative, with time devoted to experiments, team projects and presenting results. The experience also introduces students to college living through a structured community, supervised activities and support from residential staff.
Research and design challenges turn subject interest into practical work students can explain.
A final presentation gives students a clear purpose for their project work.
Learning without formal grades allows students to focus on curiosity and participation.
Live-in residential staff and supervised activities provide structure for a first experience away from home.
The Course Performance Report adds instructor feedback alongside the completion certificate.
Students who enjoy collaborative STEM projects and want a supported introduction to residential college life.
You need college credit, prefer independent travel or cannot commit to every class and the structured activities.
The strongest value is the combination of practical STEM work and supported independence. Students have a project to develop, an audience to present to and a residential community in which to practice managing everyday responsibilities.
Families should judge the experience by the selected course and the student's readiness for its workload. It is non-credit and does not offer a special undergraduate admissions pathway, so its value rests on learning, feedback and personal development.
