Save programMEDscienceTECH Visionaries connects robotics and AI with clinical medicine through a team challenge to build a functional surgical robot.
Students specialize in technical or business roles, test their ideas in medical simulations, and refine prototypes through repeated pitches and professional feedback.
MEDscienceTECH Visionaries is HMS MEDscience’s intensive surgical robotics and AI summer program. Students work in small teams with specialized roles to design and build a functional AI surgical robot, connecting computer science, engineering, surgery and business.
The experience combines medical simulations, biodesign prototyping and frequent product pitches to industry professionals. Activities include treating STAN, an interactive simulated patient, controlling a surgical training robot at STRATUS, and visiting Johnson & Johnson to meet surgeons and medtech professionals.
The surgical-robot challenge gives coding and engineering work a concrete healthcare purpose.
Specialized team roles connect technical development with clinical understanding and business communication.
Repeated pitches and expert feedback make revision part of the project, rather than an afterthought.
Medical simulations and access to a surgical training robot connect student prototypes with professional practice.
Students with robotics or coding experience who want to apply their skills to medical technology and contribute actively to a specialized team.
You need an introductory coding course, a residential package or academic credit.
For a student already interested in robotics, the strongest value is the combination of a demanding build, clinical context and repeated professional feedback. It offers concrete work to reflect on when exploring biomedical engineering or medical technology.
The fee and family-arranged accommodation make the overall commitment substantial. Judge it by the project experience and learning rather than the Harvard setting alone: it is a short, non-credit program, and successful teamwork requires existing technical confidence.
