Arabic I is the first course in Northwestern's first-year Arabic sequence. It combines formal written Arabic with Levantine spoken Arabic rather than treating literacy and conversation as separate subjects.
Expect interactive conversation, reading practice, small-group exercises, quizzes, and a final project. It suits students who want a structured academic foundation and are comfortable participating actively.
Arabic I Credit Course is Northwestern University's ARABIC 111-1, offered through its College Preparation Program. It introduces Arabic listening, speaking, reading, and writing through an integrated approach to Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect.
Students study the alphabet, numbers, and about 200 everyday words covering topics such as family, work, transportation, and food. Live online teaching includes conversational practice, reading, small-group exercises, and cultural presentations, supported by audiovisual materials.
Combining Modern Standard Arabic with Levantine speech gives students a practical introduction to Arabic's written and spoken varieties.
Conversation, reading, and small-group exercises provide practice across all four language skills.
A defined alphabet, number, and everyday-vocabulary syllabus makes the beginner focus concrete.
A graded undergraduate course offers a more substantial academic commitment than informal language practice.
Motivated beginners who want an academic introduction to written and spoken Arabic and enjoy interactive language practice.
You need self-paced study or cannot protect time for weekday attendance and daily homework.
This course is worth considering if you want structured Arabic study with regular speaking practice and formal academic assessment. Its integrated approach connects literacy with the spoken language students will encounter in everyday communication.
The compressed pace demands sustained attention, and the tuition is a substantial commitment for an introductory course. Arabic 111-1 is only the first step: the broader first-year proficiency objectives require the full three-course sequence, and participation does not guarantee admission to Northwestern.
