Northwestern's Moneyball seminar connects sports analytics with the decisions made by general managers, coaches, and league offices.
You evaluate a professional sports organization, then collaborate on an expansion franchise's strategy and present your decisions.
It suits students who enjoy sports and want to understand how numbers, staffing, salaries, and player development influence success.
Moneyball 2.0 is a Northwestern University IN FOCUS seminar about the business and analytical decisions behind professional sports. It examines how front offices build rosters, develop players, manage salaries, and negotiate acquisitions across major leagues.
The experience combines college-style discussion, reading, and study with practical assignments. Students evaluate an existing sports organization and work together to design an expansion franchise, explaining how their staffing and player-development choices support a competitive strategy.
Katie Krall's experience connects player development, baseball analytics, and league operations to the seminar's central questions.
The individual team evaluation asks students to explain competitive advantages through ownership, staffing, payroll, and roster decisions.
The expansion-franchise project turns sports enthusiasm into a strategy students must defend in a presentation.
Coverage across several professional leagues encourages students to compare approaches rather than focus on one sport.
Students who enjoy sports and want to explore the analytical and business choices behind professional teams.
Your priority is athletic training; the central activities are organizational analysis, writing, and strategy presentations.
The seminar offers a focused way to test whether sports operations interests you beyond being a fan. Its strongest features are an instructor with relevant professional experience and assignments that require you to explain real organizational choices.
The value depends on whether you want academic exploration and can justify the program expense. A short seminar cannot provide the depth of sustained study or professional work experience, and participation does not guarantee admission to Northwestern.
