College Writing Workshop is NYU’s introduction to college-level reading, research and writing, taught by its writing faculty.
You develop an analytical essay through close reading, drafting, revision and constructive feedback from classmates.
It suits students who want to strengthen academic writing habits and learn how to adapt an essay for different audiences.
College Writing Workshop is an optional course within NYU’s summer Precollege program, taught by NYU’s writing faculty. It introduces college-level reading and writing techniques while developing research skills through an essay workshop.
Students investigate an idea from a professional writer’s essay and deepen their analysis using a secondary source. Drafting, revision and peer feedback shape the experience, alongside practice using lived experience as evidence and adapting writing for audiences beyond the classroom.
NYU’s writing faculty teach a course with a clearly defined academic writing focus.
The essay task connects close reading with secondary-source analysis, giving students a concrete intellectual challenge.
Repeated drafting and revision make improvement part of the process rather than a single final submission.
Constructive peer feedback helps students practice both evaluating writing and responding thoughtfully to criticism.
The course explicitly teaches students to transfer writing habits to other disciplines and audiences.
Students who want to strengthen analytical writing and are willing to revise their work and exchange constructive feedback.
You want college credit from the writing course or a standalone workshop outside NYU Precollege.
The workshop is a strong academic fit if your goal is to become a more deliberate reader and essay writer. Its combination of source analysis, revision and peer feedback offers practice that can carry into high school and undergraduate coursework.
Its value depends on engaging with the writing process and attending regularly. The course does not award college credit, and participation in Precollege does not guarantee undergraduate admission to NYU.
