TeenArch Studio recreates the working habits of a college architecture studio: develop an idea, make models and drawings, receive critique, and revise.
The design brief explores hard and soft materials, leading to a proposed studio extension at Perloff Hall. Final presentations and a design portfolio make the experience useful for testing an interest in architectural study.
TeenArch Studio is UCLA Architecture and Urban Design’s introduction to architectural and design thinking through a college-style studio. Students work with drawing, physical model-making, and 3D modeling, supported by seminars, group discussions, and instructor feedback.
The studio brief, Tactile Transformations, explores how hard and soft materials shape architectural form. Students develop study models and drawings into a proposal for an extension in the courtyard at Perloff Hall, then present their work to guest critics.
The studio moves students from material experiments to a coherent architectural proposal, making design thinking tangible.
Individual feedback and studio reviews give students practice revising ideas rather than simply completing exercises.
Final presentations to guest critics offer a realistic introduction to explaining and defending design decisions.
A design portfolio and university credit provide concrete outcomes alongside subject exploration.
Students who want to test architecture through making, drawing, critique, and revision, including beginners curious about studio study.
You want a self-paced online course or a supervised residential camp, because virtual meetings are scheduled and housing is arranged independently.
TeenArch Studio can be worthwhile if you want to find out whether you enjoy the process of architectural design. Models, drawings, critique, and a final presentation give you a stronger basis for that decision than a lecture-only introduction.
The value depends on your willingness to revise work and meet the attendance requirements. Families also need to budget for additional fees and practical arrangements; credit transfer is decided by the receiving institution, and attending UCLA Summer Sessions does not confer an admissions advantage.
