It suits students who want to experiment across genres and learn from published writers while experiencing university academic life.
The Creative Writing Summer Academic Experience Course is a University of St Andrews course exploring fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama through both reading and writing. Students examine contemporary authors from a writer's perspective and practice techniques such as characterization, dialogue, metaphor and narrative structure.
Published, award-winning writers lead lectures, workshops and group work within a residential university experience. Students develop independent writing, collaborate with peers and have opportunities for feedback, while drawing inspiration from the historic and natural landscape around St Andrews.
Published, award-winning writers connect literary techniques with practical writing and feedback.
Coverage across fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and drama gives students room to test different forms.
Independent writing and a collaborative project combine personal experimentation with learning from peers.
The course links clarity, planning and structure to writing beyond creative work, including university study.
Students who enjoy reading and want to develop original writing through experimentation, workshops and feedback.
You want a course devoted entirely to one genre or prefer studying without group work and residential routines.
The strongest reason to choose this course is the chance to practice writing with guidance from published writers and responses from other students. Its mix of reading, exercises and independent work offers a useful way to discover which genres and techniques you want to pursue further.
The residential experience adds campus access and cultural activities, but it also requires a substantial family commitment. Treat the certificate as recognition of successful participation; the lasting value depends on how you use feedback and continue writing afterward.
