Law, Ethics & Society introduces Canadian legal principles through questions about right and wrong, citizenship and the role of laws.
Students work with case studies and group projects, hear guest speakers and take field trips before completing a final course project.
The strongest fit is a student who wants to test an interest in legal studies while practicing academic English and learning with classmates from different backgrounds.
Law, Ethics & Society Course is a Pre-University option offered by the University of Toronto's New College. It examines ethical decision-making, citizens' rights and obligations, and the basic principles behind the Canadian legal system.
Students compare Canadian legal ideas with their own systems through case studies, group projects, guest speakers and field trips. Lectures, texts and activities lead toward a final course project, while the broader program combines academic study with residence life and organized activities.
Comparing Canadian legal principles with students' own systems gives the course a useful international perspective.
Case studies, group projects, guest speakers and field trips offer several ways to engage with legal questions.
A final course project gives students a concrete focus for applying what they learn.
Resident counselors and organized activities make the campus experience structured beyond the classroom.
Students curious about legal studies who enjoy ethical questions, collaborative work and a challenging academic environment.
You want a law-only day course or a lightly scheduled vacation; the package includes an afternoon subject, residence and mandatory activities.
This course is worth considering if you want to explore how legal systems respond to ethical and social questions. Comparing systems and completing a project can help you identify which parts of legal studies interest you most.
The financial commitment covers a broader residential experience, including a second academic subject, rather than law tuition alone. Its value therefore depends on whether you also want campus living and organized activities; assess your interest in the whole package before committing.
