Save programDiscovering the Secret World of Hormones introduces endocrinology through the biological systems behind metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
Students critique scientific papers, explore research techniques, and finish by turning a hormone-related question into a testable hypothesis and experiment design.
Its strongest fit is a student who enjoys asking how scientists know something and wants to explore biological research.
Discovering the Secret World of Hormones is an endocrinology course within Vanderbilt Summer Academy, run by Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth. It examines how hormones regulate metabolism, growth, and reproduction, connecting cellular mechanisms with whole-body effects and disorders.
The experience combines an accelerated campus course with VSA's residential community. Students critique recent primary literature, learn about innovative research techniques, and hear from scientists before developing their own research question, testable hypothesis, and experiment design.
The course connects familiar experiences such as appetite and tiredness with the cellular mechanisms behind hormone regulation.
Primary literature critique introduces the reasoning behind scientific claims rather than relying only on textbook explanations.
The final project gives students a concrete way to practice moving from curiosity to a testable experiment.
The listed instructor's endocrinology and diabetes research background closely matches the course's academic focus.
Students curious about biological research who enjoy interpreting scientific ideas and want to practice hypothesis development.
You want a relaxed summer camp, extensive unsupervised time, or academic credit from your summer study.
This course is a strong academic fit if you want to understand how biological researchers investigate hormones. The combination of primary literature critique and experiment design offers a useful test of whether you enjoy scientific reasoning as much as learning biological facts.
The main limitation is the intensity: VSA combines substantial classroom time with a structured residential schedule. Judge its value by the subject exploration and instructor feedback you want to gain; VSA does not award academic credit or provide an undergraduate admissions advantage.

Main challenge
Turning a broad hormone-related interest into a precise, testable hypothesis.
Choose the test-score or portfolio application route and gather your transcript.
If using the portfolio route, arrange educator recommendation documentation and draft the essay under 600 words.
Refresh basic cell biology and practice identifying a paper's research question, methods, and conclusions.
After admission, review the residential handbook and prepare the required health, insurance, and permission forms.
Useful if
You want to explore whether biological research suits your interests.
You investigate how hormones regulate the body and how researchers study those mechanisms. The course builds toward designing an experiment around an endocrinology question of your own.
Explore hormonal regulation of metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
Connect cellular mechanisms with whole-body processes and related disorders.
Critique recent primary literature and learn about innovative research techniques.
Hear from scientists about hormone research.
Develop a research question, formulate a testable hypothesis, and design an experiment.

A typical day during the program.
Approximately six hours of classroom learning each weekday.
Organized activities and transitions are supervised by PTY staff for grades 7-10.
After evening activities, students remain on their residential hall until traveling to breakfast.
The 2026 course lists Ben Stiadle, a Ph.D. student and researcher in Vanderbilt's Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biological Sciences. His interests include endocrinology, metabolism, and electrically excitable cells, with prior pancreatic-islet research into preventing type 2 diabetes.
Each VSA course has a dedicated instructor and teaching assistant.
Most students share double rooms; some share triples, and roommates are assigned randomly.
After completing this program, participants often pursue:
Develop an endocrinology experiment-design project.
Receive written instructor feedback and a performance evaluation.
Build confidence critiquing primary scientific literature.
Explore whether biological research is a direction you want to pursue.
Recommendation letters are at the instructor's discretion and fall outside the standard VSA experience.
The course takes place at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, with residential life centered on the Ingram Commons and familiarity with Peabody Campus. Nashville International Airport is approximately 20 minutes from campus, and PTY provides a required paid shuttle for students flying alone.
VSA does not include a formal Vanderbilt campus tour.
