Save programThis Vanderbilt Summer Academy course introduces exploratory and graphical data analysis through questions drawn from education, sports, economics, and health.
Students work on their own projects using provided datasets and instructions for analysis and graph-making in Excel and RStudio.
It suits students who want to understand what patterns in data can reveal and how to ask better statistical questions.
The Exploratory and Graphical Data Analysis Course is a subject-focused course within Vanderbilt Summer Academy, organized by Vanderbilt University’s Programs for Talented Youth. It introduces Exploratory Data Analysis and Graphical Data Analysis as ways to recognize patterns, develop hypotheses, and make sense of data-driven claims.
Students use provided datasets to pursue their own analysis projects in Excel and RStudio. Examples connect statistical thinking to academic performance, sports, consumer spending, and patient outcomes, while the wider VSA experience combines accelerated study with supervised campus living.
Provided datasets let students practice analysis rather than only hear about statistical concepts.
Excel and RStudio connect graph-making with tools used for practical data work.
Examples across education, sports, economics, and health show why statistical questions matter beyond math class.
The instructor’s quantitative-methods research and teaching experience give the course a clear academic foundation.
Written performance evaluations provide a more useful reflection point than attendance alone.
Students curious about statistics who want to investigate datasets, create graphs, and connect numerical patterns to questions they care about.
You want a relaxed camp, substantial unsupervised time, or a course that awards college credit.
The strongest reason to consider this course is the chance to turn curiosity into actual data analysis. Working with datasets and graphs can help students test whether they enjoy the reasoning behind statistics, while instructor feedback gives them something specific to reflect on afterward.
The residential schedule asks for sustained academic engagement and comfort with close supervision. Treat it as subject exploration and skill development: VSA does not award academic credit or promise an advantage in Vanderbilt admissions.
