Save programThis Vanderbilt Summer Academy course connects mental health science with clinical practice and responsible decision-making.
Students examine case studies involving individuals and families, explore research design, and take part in hands-on activities.
It suits students who want to understand what clinical psychologists do and test their interest in the field.
Inside Clinical Psychology: Science, Practice, and Ethics is a Vanderbilt Summer Academy course offered through Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth. It introduces clinical psychologists' work in assessment, treatment and research, with attention to thoughtful and responsible practice.
Students examine mental health case studies involving individuals and families, then explore how researchers design studies about mental health and treatment. Hands-on activities connect scientific questions with clinical decisions, while the residential program adds supervised activities and a community of academic peers.
Case studies help students connect mental health concepts with the reasoning behind assessment and treatment.
Research design shows how clinical psychologists investigate questions alongside their work in practice.
The emphasis on responsible practice encourages a thoughtful view of mental health careers.
Written instructor feedback gives students a concrete basis for reflecting on their learning.
Students curious about mental health who enjoy case studies, scientific questions and thoughtful discussion.
You want college credit or prefer substantial independence over a closely supervised residential schedule.
The strongest reason to choose this course is its connection between clinical reasoning and research. Working through cases and study-design questions can help students move beyond a general interest in mental health toward a clearer understanding of the field.
Its value depends on enjoying an intensive academic setting and structured residential life. Students receive feedback rather than college credit, and families should weigh that learning experience against the financial commitment without treating attendance as an admissions advantage.
