Save programThis Vanderbilt Summer Academy course teaches how very short stories can create tension, character, and emotional impact through carefully chosen details.
Students analyze literature, draft original prose, tackle micro-revision challenges, and workshop their writing with peers. The main output is a polished portfolio of short-form pieces.
It suits writers who enjoy close editing and discussion, with techniques that can also support longer fiction, memoirs, personal narratives, and college essays.
Short Form Prose Writing: Adventures in Narrative Minimalism is a creative writing course within Vanderbilt Summer Academy, run by Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth. It explores Flash Fiction and the Short-Short, asking how a small number of words can sustain character, tension, and meaning. Students study short-form literature across genres and apply those techniques to their own stories.
The course combines iterative drafting, micro-revision challenges, and peer workshops with a residential campus experience. The listed instructor is Jan Harris, Ph.D., a Professor of Writing at Lipscomb University. Students work toward a polished portfolio while developing techniques they can transfer to longer writing projects.
A specific focus on Flash Fiction and the Short-Short gives students a clear craft problem to explore.
Repeated drafting and micro-revision make editing a central part of the learning experience.
Peer workshops connect literary analysis with practical decisions about students' own writing.
A polished portfolio gives students a tangible record of their work.
The listed instructor brings university writing instruction and published poetry experience.
Writers who want to sharpen narrative precision, discuss literature, and revise original stories with peers.
You mainly want academic credit, an unstructured writing retreat, or substantial unsupervised time on campus.
This course has a clear educational purpose for students who want to become more deliberate storytellers. Literary analysis, drafting, and peer workshops lead toward a portfolio rather than simply exposure to writing terminology. Its strongest value is the opportunity to practice and refine a specific craft.
The accelerated academic schedule and supervised residential routine require sustained engagement. It offers neither academic credit nor an admissions advantage at Vanderbilt, so families should judge it by the writing experience and feedback. A broader writing course may suit students whose interests extend well beyond short-form prose.
