Save programThe Medicine Institute is a residential introduction to medical study and healthcare careers, combining physician-led learning with clinical simulations and visits to medical facilities.
Students practice foundational skills such as taking blood pressure, listening to the heart and lungs, suturing, using ultrasound and interviewing standardized patients.
It particularly suits students who want to test their interest in medicine through practical exposure before choosing university subjects or career pathways.
The Medicine Institute is a Wake Forest Summer Immersion Program that introduces high school students to healthcare disciplines and medical careers. Its subject coverage includes Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Ultrasound, Cancer Care and Surgery.
Students learn through simulations, laboratories, guest speakers and visits to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Practical activities include physical-examination skills, blood-pressure measurement, suturing, ultrasound and work with standardized patients.
The program gives students practical exposure to clinical skills rather than relying only on classroom teaching.
Hospital and medical-school visits provide context for how medicine is studied and practiced.
The curriculum spans several specialties, helping students compare possible medical interests.
Physician academic leaders bring current clinical practice and medical-education experience.
Residential campus life adds a realistic taste of university routines and independence.
Students who want a practical introduction to medicine, clinical environments and healthcare career options.
You need academic credit, prefer a non-residential experience or want sustained research depth beyond a one-week introduction.
This program can be worthwhile for a student who wants to test a serious interest in medicine through simulations, clinical skills and direct exposure to healthcare settings. The breadth of specialties and access to physicians and medical students make it useful for informed career exploration.
The main limitations are its one-week length, non-credit status and substantial tuition. It should be treated as an exploratory learning experience rather than a credential that materially changes university admissions prospects.
