Innovations in Science and Technology summary

IST is Yale Young Global Scholars' interdisciplinary STEM track, connecting biological, physical and applied sciences with real-world questions.

Students learn through lectures, small seminars, discussions and a mentored collaborative Capstone Project. It suits curious learners who enjoy exploring connections between subjects and working with peers.

What is Innovations in Science & Technology?

Innovations in Science & Technology is the interdisciplinary STEM track of Yale Young Global Scholars, an academic enrichment program at Yale University. Students explore physics, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, astronomy, engineering, neuroscience, immunology, psychology and earth science. The emphasis is on applying scientific principles across disciplines and scales.

The residential experience combines Yale faculty lectures, small seminars, breakout discussions and hands-on activities. Students also develop and present a collaborative Capstone Project with YYGS instructional staff. Learning is exploratory and ungraded, encouraging questions, teamwork and exchange with international peers.

Why Succeed highlights Innovations in Science and Technology

    • The interdisciplinary curriculum helps students test several scientific interests before choosing a narrower direction.

    • A collaborative Capstone Project turns subject exploration into research and presentation practice.

    • Yale faculty lectures and small seminars offer contrasting ways to experience university learning.

    • Need-based aid can cover full tuition, with some named scholarships also supporting travel.

    • The ungraded learning model gives students room to ask questions and explore unfamiliar ideas.

Who is Innovations in Science and Technology for?

    Best for

Curious STEM learners who enjoy connecting scientific fields, discussing ideas and collaborating on a project.

    Not ideal if

You need college credit, a narrowly specialized course or a schedule that allows you to miss required activities.

Is Innovations in Science and Technology worth it?

IST is worth considering if your main goal is to explore scientific interests through discussion and collaborative work. Its combination of lectures, seminars and a Capstone Project offers several ways to learn, while residential life adds sustained contact with peers.

The strongest value lies in the learning experience and what you can explain afterward about your scientific interests. It offers no course credit, and YYGS explicitly says it is not a Yale feeder program. Families should weigh the full travel budget and mandatory attendance alongside any financial aid offer.
