Solving Global Challenges is a Yale Young Global Scholars track that connects public health, equality, poverty and environmental sustainability through the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Students move between lectures, seminars, breakout discussions and a collaborative capstone, practicing how to turn broad concerns into reasoned responses.
It suits curious students who enjoy connecting disciplines and discussing different perspectives, especially those interested in applying their learning to community problems.
Solving Global Challenges is an interdisciplinary track within Yale Young Global Scholars, an academic enrichment program run at Yale University. It uses the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals to examine public health, gender equality, poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability. Students investigate how apparently separate problems can share underlying causes.
The experience combines faculty lectures, small seminars, breakout discussions and a staff-mentored collaborative capstone. Students live and learn on campus, exchanging perspectives with peers from around the world. The emphasis is exploratory learning and practical problem-solving, with no grades or course credit.
The Sustainable Development Goals give the broad curriculum a clear framework for connecting global issues.
Combining STEM, social sciences and humanities helps students test solutions from more than one disciplinary perspective.
The collaborative capstone turns discussion into research and presentation practice with instructional staff mentorship.
Faculty lectures and small seminars offer contrasting ways to experience university learning.
Residential learning creates space to compare perspectives with an international peer community.
Students who enjoy connecting science, society and policy, discussing unfamiliar perspectives and developing collaborative responses to community problems.
You want a narrowly specialized course, college credit or substantial free time during a campus stay.
SGC is worth considering if you want to investigate how global problems connect and practice discussing solutions with people whose experiences differ from yours. Its capstone gives the academic experience a concrete focus, while faculty lectures and seminars help you test your interest in interdisciplinary study.
The value depends on whether that learning justifies the residential fee and travel commitment for your family. Need-based aid can reduce tuition, but awards are limited and travel usually requires separate funding. Choose it for the learning experience rather than an assumed advantage in Yale admissions.
