Founded in 1981, Shad Canada is a nonprofit organization providing immersive pre-university STEAM and entrepreneurship programs for students in Grades 10 and 11. It partners with post-secondary institutions across Canada and offers residential, virtual, and specialized residential pathways. Its mission centers on youth potential, innovation, leadership, and lasting community impact, supported by a worldwide network of more than 27,000 alumni.

    Teaching style

Shad emphasizes interdisciplinary exploration through lectures, workshops, labs, field experiences, and collaborative challenges. Students learn by doing, applying design thinking and entrepreneurship to real-world problems while developing leadership, communication, and teamwork. Learning spans science, technology, engineering, society, culture, and future readiness, with specific topics varying by campus.

    Reputation & Succeed take

Shad has operated since 1981 and reports more than 27,000 alumni. Testimonials published on its website describe increased confidence, exposure to different backgrounds, and enduring friendships. These testimonials provide participant perspectives; they do not establish an independent rating or ranking.

    Our take

Shad is a strong fit for motivated high school students seeking broad STEAM exploration, entrepreneurship, and a national peer community. Its residential and virtual options offer different ways to participate, while financial assistance can help eligible domestic applicants. The main fit considerations are the full-duration commitment, language requirements, and Shad's control over final campus placement.

Shad's distinguishing features include a national post-secondary campus network, interdisciplinary STEAM and entrepreneurship learning, residential and virtual formats, specialized residential pathways, and a large alumni community. All formats share an emphasis on learning, community, innovation, and exploration.

    Who this provider suits

    Who should choose them

Curious, creative, community-minded students in Grades 10 and 11 who want to explore STEAM, entrepreneurship, leadership, and future study options. Shad suits students ready to collaborate with peers from different backgrounds and commit to the entire experience.

    Who it may not suit

Students who cannot commit to the full duration or who require guaranteed placement at one specific campus should consider other options. Students outside the stated grade eligibility or without the required English proficiency, or French proficiency for En Français, do not meet the published application requirements.
