Brown's course combines global health study with socially responsible leadership. Its focus is understanding health inequities and turning that understanding into community action.
Students learn through readings, discussions, group work, and interactions with experts. The capstone is a practical Action Plan presented to peers and guests.
It suits students interested in the connections between medicine, public policy, environmental challenges, and social justice who enjoy collaborative learning.
The Leadership and Global Health Course is a Brown University Pre-College course connecting global health with socially responsible leadership. Students examine how disease, poverty, environmental change, and unequal access to health care affect communities. It brings together perspectives from medicine, policy, economics, and social justice.
The on-campus experience uses readings, classroom discussion, and group work to develop both subject understanding and leadership practice. Students work toward a community Action Plan, supported by instructors and Leadership Institute Teaching Associates. An oral presentation asks them to explain how their proposed action could address a local problem.
The curriculum connects disease and health care with policy, climate change, bioethics, and social justice.
The community Action Plan gives students a concrete way to apply their learning beyond the classroom.
Public speaking, active listening, and group work are explicit learning goals rather than incidental benefits.
An instructor Course Performance Report provides individual feedback alongside the completion credential.
Students drawn to health equity and community change who want to discuss complex issues, collaborate, and develop a realistic local project.
You mainly want college credit or a light summer schedule; the course is noncredit and combines substantial classroom time with daily homework.
This course is a strong fit when your interest in health extends to inequality, public policy, and community leadership. The Action Plan makes its value more concrete: you leave with a proposed response to a problem you care about. Instructor feedback can also help you reflect on your academic engagement.
The investment makes most sense if you want intensive learning and will continue developing your ideas afterward. It is noncredit, and Brown states that Pre-College is not a prospecting program for undergraduate admissions. Families should weigh the academic fit, workload, and residential independence alongside the fee.
