Summer@Brown combines broad academic choice with college-level learning inspired by Brown's Open Curriculum. Students explore a subject through discussion, collaboration and independent study without formal grades.
The campus experience adds workshops, activities and practice managing academic and social responsibilities. The Hybrid CRE option develops a research project and culminates in a poster symposium.
It suits students who want to test a subject and practice greater independence. Its value comes from the learning experience rather than an undergraduate admissions advantage.
Summer@Brown is Brown University's academic exploration program built around more than 230 non-credit courses. Its subject choices span sciences, engineering, business, legal studies, literature, health, humanities, social sciences and the arts. Classes reflect Brown's student-centered approach and encourage inquiry without formal grades.
Students choose campus, hybrid or online study, with the campus experience combining classes and independent work with workshops and activities. Residential students also practice managing daily life away from home. The Hybrid Course-Based Research Experience adds project development with instructors and a research poster symposium.
More than 230 courses give students room to explore a specific interest within a broad academic offering.
College-level coursework without formal grades encourages students to concentrate on understanding and participation.
The daily combination of classes and independent work makes time management a practical part of the experience.
Writing support, libraries and instructor office hours introduce students to university learning resources.
The Hybrid CRE provides a concrete research pathway ending in a poster symposium.
Curious students who want to explore college-level academics and are ready to manage independent work alongside a busy social environment.
You need college credit, expect an undergraduate admissions advantage, or want continuous adult supervision throughout the campus day.
Summer@Brown can be worthwhile when a student has a clear subject interest and wants to test the demands of college-style learning. Its combination of inquiry, independent work and campus resources offers useful practice in taking responsibility for learning.
The financial commitment deserves careful comparison with the exact course and format a family wants. Courses are non-credit, admission does not guarantee a preferred course, and Brown does not describe Pre-College as an undergraduate recruitment pathway. Choose it for the academic experience and personal readiness it can develop.
