Women and Leadership examines how gender, feminism and intersectionality shape leadership, combining social analysis with practical inclusive leadership skills.
Expect discussion, collaborative work, presentations and frequent writing, culminating in an Action Plan for a social problem in your community.
It suits students who want to connect ideas about gender and social justice with a concrete project they can pursue beyond the classroom.
Women and Leadership is a Brown University Pre-College course within the Leadership Institute. It examines gender, feminism, intersectionality and inclusive leadership in the United States and worldwide, asking how social, political and intercultural factors shape women’s leadership.
The on-campus experience combines readings, case studies and guest speakers with guided discussion, teamwork, presentations and writing. Students apply their learning through a capstone Action Plan designed to address a social problem in their own community.
The course connects historical gender analysis with contemporary leadership challenges and movements.
Discussion, writing and presentations give students several ways to develop and communicate their ideas.
The Action Plan turns academic learning into a practical proposal for community change.
Instructor and Teaching Associate guidance helps students set realistic goals and anticipate project challenges.
Students interested in gender, social justice and leadership who enjoy discussion and want to develop a community-focused project.
You want a light summer activity or college credit, given the intensive classes, daily homework and non-credit format.
This course offers a clear link between studying women’s leadership and practicing socially responsible leadership. Its strongest feature is the supported Action Plan, which gives students a concrete way to apply their ideas after the course.
The value depends on whether you want sustained discussion, writing and independent project work. It is non-credit, requires substantial daily effort and should be chosen for its learning experience rather than an expected advantage in Brown undergraduate admissions.
