Students turn a mobile game or app idea into a playable GameMaker project. The process combines interface design, visual coding, custom artwork, and testing.
It suits students who want to make something interactive rather than only learn programming concepts. The strongest fit is someone interested in both how a game works and how its interface feels.
Mobile Game & App Design Studio is an iD Tech online camp focused on creating a playable touchscreen game or app. Students use GameMaker to connect visual coding, game mechanics, custom sprites, and interface design in one project.
The learning process moves from planning and wireframing to implementation, customization, and playtesting. Instructor-led small-group sessions and peer collaboration are paired with independent development, giving students time to turn shared lessons into their own ideas.
The sequence covers the whole creative process, from a design document and wireframe to a playable final project.
UX design sits alongside game mechanics, helping students consider the player’s experience as well as the code.
Daily independent development gives students room to customize their work beyond a shared exercise.
Students retain their project, mobile launch instructions, and a transcript documenting the skills learned.
Students who want to combine game mechanics, visual creativity, and interface design in a project they can play and improve.
You want dedicated one-on-one tuition or a course centered on text-based programming rather than visual coding and game creation.
This is a useful option if a student’s main goal is to make an interactive project and test whether game design interests them. Its combination of prototyping, implementation, and playtesting gives the finished work a clear development story.
The main limitation is depth: a short camp is an introduction, so students should plan to keep refining their project afterward. Families should also budget time for the independent development alongside live classes; the value depends on engaging with both.
