    Medicine and Life Sciences summary

This Imperial summer school connects medical teaching with hands-on clinical workshops and life sciences experiments. Students explore both patient-facing skills and the laboratory methods behind biological research.

The subject teaching leads into an interdisciplinary Innovation Challenge. It suits students who want to compare their interest in medicine with their enjoyment of experimental science and collaborative problem-solving.

What is Medicine and Life Sciences Summer School?

The Medicine and Life Sciences Summer School is a subject stream within Imperial College London's Global Summer School. It combines university-style medicine teaching with clinical practical sessions and life sciences laboratory work. Students investigate genetics, personalized medicine and biological systems through lectures, discussion and experiments.

The residential experience includes clinical workshops at St Mary's Hospital and experiments using modified Drosophila fly strains. In the second week, students collaborate with peers from other subjects on an Innovation Challenge led by the Imperial Enterprise Lab. Academic teaching sits alongside campus life and organized social activities.

Why Succeed highlights Medicine and Life Sciences

    • The combination of clinical workshops and genetics experiments helps students test two distinct sides of medical and biological study.

    • Hospital-based practical teaching gives the clinical element a concrete setting beyond classroom discussion.

    • The life sciences sequence moves from laboratory methods to interpreting results, offering a useful taste of experimental reasoning.

    • The Innovation Challenge adds interdisciplinary teamwork and presentation practice to the subject teaching.

    • Named Imperial teaching staff and student mentors provide clear academic and pastoral points of contact.

Who is Medicine and Life Sciences for?

    Best for

Students curious about both clinical medicine and laboratory biology who enjoy practical work, discussion and group projects.

    Not ideal if

You want a day-only course, regular family visits or exclusively clinical teaching without life sciences and interdisciplinary project work.

Is Medicine and Life Sciences worth it?

This is a strong option for students who want to discover whether they enjoy both medical concepts and practical biological research. Hospital workshops, laboratory experiments and an interdisciplinary project create several opportunities to identify interests and reflect on how they learn.

The residential commitment and substantial fee make the decision a family planning choice as well as an academic one. Its value depends on engaging with the teaching and discussing what you learned afterward. Consider whether the combined medicine, life sciences and innovation structure matches your goals before committing.
