    International Human Rights Law summary

An introductory university-level course exploring how the international human rights movement developed and how its principles apply to contemporary disputes.

Expect interactive lectures, seminars, group discussion and independent research, with assessment through coursework and a presentation.

The strongest fit is someone who enjoys examining competing arguments and wants academic depth rather than a mainly recreational summer experience.

What is International Human Rights Law Summer School?

International Human Rights Law Summer School is an introductory, assessed course within King's College London's Undergraduate Summer School. It explores the theories and modern history of the human rights movement before examining equality, freedom of speech and assembly, terrorism, and armed non-state actors.

Students learn on campus through interactive lectures, seminars, small group discussions and independent study. Coursework and a presentation turn that learning into researched arguments, while extracurricular activities offer opportunities to meet other summer students.

Why Succeed highlights International Human Rights Law

    • The course links foundational human rights theories to specific contemporary disputes, giving students concrete arguments to examine.

    • Its published coursework and presentation weighting makes the academic expectations clear.

    • A module-specific syllabus states the workload and credit equivalence, helping students assess its academic value.

    • King's academics teach through interactive lectures and seminars rather than relying solely on passive lectures.

Who is International Human Rights Law for?

    Best for

Eligible students or professionals who want to examine human rights through legal theory, history and contemporary case studies.

    Not ideal if

You want a light sightseeing course or guaranteed degree credit without approval from your home institution.

Is International Human Rights Law worth it?

This is a strong option if you want structured academic study of human rights and are prepared to develop arguments through assessed work. The combination of theory, case studies and a presentation gives you a clearer basis for evaluating your interest in the subject.

The main tradeoff is the substantial independent workload alongside tuition, housing and living expenses. Its value is stronger when the content serves a specific academic goal; degree credit requires separate approval, and past institutional visits should not drive your decision.
