Succeed compares the work students actually do, their contact with employers, supervision and financial arrangements. Provider descriptions establish program facts; the fit labels explain Succeed's editorial assessment.

    • What we check: Succeed reviews activities, employer access, supervision, eligibility and published fees or compensation.

    • Official sources: Employer, government, hospital and provider pages establish factual distinctions between placements, observation and simulations.

    • Last verified: This records when a detail was reviewed, rather than guaranteeing that it remains unchanged.

    • Why details change: Hosts, activities, staffing, fees and participation requirements can change between program runs.

    • Succeed makes its own editorial comparisons; inclusion does not constitute an endorsement of a provider.

Internships involve assigned work within a host organization, while job shadowing centers on observing professionals. Career simulations use staged tasks to explore a profession, and research placements involve investigating a focused question. In the UK, work experience is a broad term that can cover placements, observation or educational activities, so the name alone does not establish the format.

Paid jobs: Microsoft's High School Discovery Program combines product-team project work with employee mentoring, while NYC SYEP's older-youth component assigns participants to worksites. Unpaid placements: Royal Papworth Hospital describes voluntary observation and work alongside healthcare professionals. Stipend-supported research: SEAP combines Navy laboratory research with mentoring from scientists and engineers.

Paid-to-attend simulations: InvestIN's Summer Experiences combine career simulations, professional contact and workplace visits. A visit provides employer exposure, but does not establish an employer placement; compare assigned tasks and daily supervision before choosing. BAE Systems offers on-site experience and virtual engineering projects, with pay and participation fees unconfirmed.

Compare the daily experience before judging a program by its title or provider name.

    • Identify whether you will complete host work, observe professionals, conduct research or practice simulated tasks.

    • Ask for examples of assigned tasks and what you will produce.

    • Distinguish employee mentoring from guest talks, networking sessions and workplace visits.

    • Confirm who supervises daily activities and how often you receive individual feedback.

    • Separate paid jobs, stipend-supported research, unpaid placements and paid-to-attend programs.

    • Check residency, work authorization, school requirements and subject prerequisites before planning travel.

    • Confirm support for accessibility, medical needs and communication with a parent or guardian.

Career experience is worth considering when you have a specific question about a profession and meaningful activities to explore it. Assigned tasks, observation and feedback can give you concrete examples to reflect on afterward.

A short program offers only a partial view of working life, and professional contact may happen mainly in group sessions. A costly simulation may offer less sustained workplace exposure than a local placement, while a placement may provide less structured teaching. Choose the format that addresses your question within a manageable budget and schedule.

    Internships and career experience FAQs

An internship involves assigned work within a host organization, while shadowing mainly involves observing professionals. A career simulation uses staged tasks in an educational setting. Compare the daily activities and supervisor's role to understand which experience you are choosing.

No: paid employment, stipend-supported research, unpaid placements and fee-based educational programs have different financial arrangements. Microsoft describes Discovery as paid, SEAP provides research stipends, and Royal Papworth describes its work experience as unpaid. A participation fee means the student pays to attend.

A title alone does not establish an employer placement or the work you will do. Request the host organization's identity, assigned tasks, daily supervisor and expected output. Distinguish employer work from research teaching, professional talks, workplace visits and simulations.

Requirements vary by program and experience type. InvestIN accepts international students, while Microsoft Discovery has local school and residency requirements and Royal Papworth requires UK residency. Participation eligibility, travel permission and authorization to undertake paid work are separate matters.

UK work experience can mean an employer placement, professional observation or a structured educational experience. Sixth form usually refers to the final two years of secondary education, commonly Years 12 and 13. Compare each program's activities and requirements rather than treating UK school years as automatic US grade equivalents.

Start with your school's career adviser, local employers, hospitals and public youth employment programs. Ask whether they offer student observation or assigned project work, then confirm supervision and participation requirements. A local option may reduce travel costs and make a longer commitment practical.

A venue does not establish who operates or teaches a program. InvestIN states that it hires institutional space commercially and is not affiliated with those institutions. Confirm the operator and any explicitly stated affiliation separately from the location.

Keep a record of your tasks, feedback, questions and reflections, alongside work you have permission to retain. Describe simulations, observation and employer work accurately when discussing the experience. Protect confidential workplace information and patient details.
