A practical introduction to digital media modeled on CDM's Master of Digital Media, with a focus on collaborative product development.
You move from identifying a real-world problem and making a paper prototype to building, testing and presenting a team digital prototype.
It suits students who want to explore the intersection of design, technology and communication through making something together.
The Centre for Digital Media Mini School is a collaborative digital product design program within UBC Future Global Leaders. Its curriculum is modeled on CDM's Master of Digital Media and introduces how digital media serves industries beyond video games.
Students practice team communication and human-centered design before developing a digital prototype. Peer user testing and a final presentation turn the experience into a complete introduction to the product development process.
The paper-to-digital prototype sequence gives students a clear experience of how an idea becomes a product.
Peer user testing encourages students to improve their work in response to actual user feedback.
Industry guest speakers connect the classroom project with digital media careers.
The focus on collaboration helps students test whether they enjoy the teamwork involved in digital product development.
Students curious about digital media who enjoy collaborative design, practical experimentation and giving useful feedback.
You mainly want independent coding practice or university preparation lectures, since mini school afternoons are devoted to subject classes.
The strongest value is experiencing a complete collaborative design process, rather than only hearing about digital media careers. Building a prototype, testing it and explaining the results can help you decide whether this kind of work interests you.
Choose it for subject exploration and practical teamwork, with expectations suited to an introductory program. It does not provide a direct university admission pathway, and the residence package is an additional expense.
