About UBC Future Global Leaders

UBC Future Global Leaders is UBC Extended Learning's pre-university offering for high school students ages 15–18 who have completed grade 10 or equivalent. It offers summer academic learning online and at the UBC Vancouver campus, taught by UBC professors and affiliated instructors. On campus, students explore subjects through two-week courses or mini schools at a first-year university level without exams. Courses combine academic classes with university preparation lectures, while mini schools provide additional subject-focused class time. Students can commute or live in residence and participate in social and recreational activities.

Teaching style

Teaching introduces high school students to first-year university subjects in small classes. On-campus learning has no exams, with a choice between academic courses plus university preparation lectures and mini schools with morning and afternoon subject instruction. Online courses use small virtual classes. Featured instructor profiles illustrate hands-on neuroscience learning and the use of VR in anatomy.

Reputation & Succeed take

Future Global Leaders draws on its UBC affiliation and instruction by UBC professors and affiliated instructors. Provider-published student profiles describe exploring career interests, receiving instructor guidance, and connecting with international peers. These accounts offer individual perspectives rather than independent reviews or measured outcomes.

Our take

A strong option for eligible high school students who want to test academic interests and experience university life with structured support. The choice of online learning, commuting, or residence makes it useful for different levels of campus immersion. Treat it as academic exploration and preparation: UBC explicitly states that participation is not a direct pathway to university admission.

Features to compare with other providers include UBC professors and affiliated instructors, first-year university content without exams on campus, small classes, and both online and campus delivery. On campus, students can choose academic courses with university preparation lectures or mini schools with more subject instruction, then select residence or commuting.

Who this provider suits

Who should choose them

High school students ages 15–18 who have completed grade 10 or equivalent and want to explore university subjects, clarify academic interests, and meet peers from Canada and abroad. Campus options suit students seeking university preparation and social activities, with residence available for those who want to experience living on campus. Online courses suit students seeking academic exploration from home.

Who it may not suit

Students seeking a direct admission pathway to UBC or another university should choose a different route. The stated audience also excludes students outside ages 15–18 or those who have not completed grade 10 or equivalent. Students wanting unrestricted independence in residence should consider the scheduled attendance check-ins and supervised routines before registering.
