This mini school explores how marine scientists investigate ocean ecosystems and use their findings to protect marine life.
Students work in teams and research tools such as drones and data science platforms, connecting scientific questions with sustainable fishing and policy.
It suits students who want to test an interest in ocean conservation while developing research, problem-solving and communication skills.
This is a marine science mini school offered through UBC Extended Learning’s Future Global Leaders on-campus program. It introduces how scientists study marine ecosystems and connect their findings with ocean protection. Students learn through team-based exploration at the UBC Vancouver campus.
The academic focus includes marine mammals, the deep sea, sustainable fishing and research tools such as drones and data science platforms. Morning and afternoon classes provide a deeper subject introduction than the parent program’s regular course format. Students also explore learning pathways and careers connected with the ocean.
The curriculum connects marine ecosystems with practical conservation questions, giving scientific study a clear purpose.
Research into drones and data science platforms shows how technology contributes to understanding the ocean.
Team-based work combines subject exploration with problem-solving and communicating ideas.
First-year university-level teaching offers a useful way to test academic interests without exams.
Students curious about marine ecosystems, sustainability and how research can influence ocean policy.
You want an exam-based qualification or a direct admissions pathway to UBC.
The mini school is a strong fit if you want to understand marine science beyond familiar ocean wildlife topics. Its combination of ecosystems, research technology and policy can help you decide which questions interest you most. Team-based work also gives you opportunities to practice explaining scientific ideas.
The value depends on whether subject exploration and campus experience justify the family’s budget. A Letter of Completion recognizes participation under attendance and conduct conditions, but the program does not provide a direct route into university. Treat it as a chance to develop interests and skills rather than an admissions guarantee.
