UBC Theatre and Film faculty introduce costume construction through practical sewing projects that connect making techniques with character and storytelling.
Students progress from machine basics and hand sewing toward more complex construction, exploring patterns, fabrics, notions and fitting.
The strongest fit is a student who wants to understand how costumes are made and test an interest in theater, film or fashion production.
Costume Construction Intensive: UBC Theatre and Film Mini School is a practical introduction to making costumes within UBC Extended Learning's Future Global Leaders program. UBC Theatre and Film faculty connect sewing techniques with the ways costumes communicate character, create imagined worlds and support stories.
Projects begin with basic machine use and hand sewing, then move toward more complex construction. Students explore patterns, material selection and performer fitting while learning about production processes for stage and screen. The experience also introduces costume building as a possible career and a skill set with wider creative applications.
The sequence from basic sewing to more complex construction gives students a practical way to develop technique.
Teaching by UBC Theatre and Film faculty connects costume making with professional production contexts.
Pattern work, materials and fitting are linked to storytelling rather than treated as isolated craft exercises.
Both beginners and experienced sewists can use the course to refine their work and explore creative career directions.
Students interested in sewing, fashion or costume production who want practical projects connected to theater and film storytelling.
You mainly want acting practice or university preparation lectures, since this mini school focuses on costume construction in both morning and afternoon classes.
This mini school is worth considering when you want sustained sewing practice and a clearer understanding of costume production. Its combination of practical construction and storytelling gives students more to reflect on than a general campus visit.
The value depends on whether making costumes is an interest you want to pursue, because both daily class blocks focus on the subject. Treat the experience as skill development and career exploration: Future Global Leaders is not a direct admission pathway to UBC or another university.
