FutureMed Academy combines medicine and AI through practical exploration of ultrasound, diagnostic chatbots, research, and ethical questions.
Teaching involves UBC medical faculty, clinicians, and medical students, alongside university preparation workshops.
It suits students testing an interest in healthcare technology through collaborative learning without exams or homework.
FutureMed Academy is UBC Extended Learning’s summer course exploring the intersection of medicine and artificial intelligence. It forms part of UBC Future Global Leaders and combines foundational AI learning with hands-on healthcare activities.
Students try point-of-care ultrasound, test medical chatbots, and evaluate research papers while discussing ethics and bias. Morning academic classes lead into afternoon university preparation workshops, with teaching from UBC medical faculty, practicing clinicians, and medical students.
Ultrasound activities and chatbot testing make the relationship between AI and patient care concrete.
Research-paper evaluation and ethics discussions encourage students to question medical AI’s limitations.
Faculty, clinicians, and medical students offer several perspectives on medicine and health-sciences careers.
University preparation workshops connect subject exploration with the transition to higher education.
Students curious about both medicine and AI who enjoy practical experimentation and discussion.
You want a graded research project or a direct university admissions pathway; this course emphasizes exploration without exams or homework.
FutureMed is worth considering if you want to test whether healthcare technology interests you through practical activities and conversations with medical experts. Its combination of chatbot evaluation, ultrasound, and ethical discussion gives students several ways to explore the subject.
The strongest value lies in learning and reflection rather than an admissions advantage. UBC explicitly says Future Global Leaders is not a direct university pathway, so families should weigh the campus experience against the course fee and optional residence costs.
