Design for Stage and Screen: UBC Theatre and Film Mini School is a production design introduction offered through UBC Extended Learning's Future Global Leaders program. It explores how sets, costumes, lights and sound communicate character, build imagined worlds and express a production's themes.
Students attend morning and afternoon campus classes and develop ideas through hands-on projects, discussions and presentations. The learning connects script analysis and research with practical design choices, while introducing further study and careers in the entertainment industry.
The course connects practical design choices to storytelling, giving creative work a clear purpose beyond visual appeal.
Studying sets, costumes, lighting and sound together helps students understand how different production roles contribute to one audience experience.
Projects, discussions and presentations offer several ways to develop and communicate design ideas.
The beginner-friendly approach makes it useful for testing an interest before choosing further theater or film study.
Students who want to explore the creative work behind stage, screen or social media productions and enjoy developing ideas through practical projects.
You mainly want acting practice, university preparation lectures or a direct university admission pathway.
This mini school can be worthwhile if you want to test an interest in production design through sustained practical study. Its strongest feature is the connection between storytelling goals and the combined use of sets, costumes, lighting and sound.
The value depends on whether that specific focus matches your interests and your family's budget. Treat the experience as subject exploration and skills development: the Letter of Completion is conditional, and participation is not a direct university admission pathway.
