Get next-cycle reminderUCLA introduces Python through economics and finance examples, connecting programming fundamentals with data exploration, analysis, and visualization. Teaching combines faculty lectures with peer-led discussion.
Students build toward two assessed projects/presentations and complete a midterm and cumulative final. It suits beginners who want an academically structured introduction to coding through financial questions.
Python for Economics and Finance is a UCLA Summer Sessions academic program taught through the Economics Department. It introduces Python using financial and economic data, linking programming fundamentals with practical analysis and visualization.
Students attend live remote lectures, join discussions led by Economics Peer Learning Facilitators, and work toward projects and presentations. Study progresses from data types, loops, and functions to NumPy, pandas, and financial applications, with exams providing a formal academic assessment.
Economic and financial examples give introductory coding a clear practical purpose.
The curriculum develops from core Python concepts to NumPy, pandas, and data visualization.
Two graded projects/presentations make applied work a substantial part of assessment.
Faculty teaching, peer-led discussion, and office hours provide several routes to academic support.
UCLA coursework and an official transcript provide a documented academic outcome.
Beginners who want to connect coding with economics and finance through live teaching and assessed academic work.
You need self-paced study or an advanced programming course, since attendance is scheduled and the curriculum is introductory.
This is a strong option if you want a structured introduction to Python with an economics and finance focus. Faculty instruction, discussion support, and substantial project assessment give you several ways to develop and demonstrate understanding.
The commitment deserves careful comparison with lower-cost introductory study because this is scheduled, assessed coursework. Credit transfer depends on the receiving institution, and attending UCLA Summer Sessions does not itself provide an admissions advantage at a UC school.
