Save programIntroduction to Statistical Analysis connects statistical reasoning with questions about education, medicine, and sports. It is a focused course within Vanderbilt Summer Academy.
Students work with provided datasets, conduct analyses, and make graphs by hand and in Excel or Google Sheets. The emphasis is on understanding results as well as calculating them.
It suits students who enjoy mathematical questions and want to understand how researchers use data to support decisions.
Introduction to Statistical Analysis is a focused academic course within Vanderbilt Summer Academy, organized by Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth. It introduces statistical inference and data analytics through questions such as whether an intervention improves test scores or whether baseball payrolls relate to batting averages.
Students study descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, significance testing, and confirmatory versus exploratory analyses. They then conduct and interpret their own analyses using provided datasets, with graph-making by hand and in Excel or Google Sheets. The academic work sits within a supervised residential campus experience.
Questions from education, medicine, and sports give abstract statistical ideas a clear practical purpose.
Working with datasets and graphs helps students connect calculations with interpretation.
Excel and Google Sheets make the analytical work relevant to tools students can continue using.
The listed instructor combines specialist Quantitative Methods training with several years of PTY teaching experience.
Written feedback and a performance evaluation support reflection without a grade-driven classroom.
Students who enjoy mathematics, want to investigate real questions with data, and would welcome accelerated study within a structured residential community.
You primarily want a credit-bearing qualification or a relaxed camp with substantial unsupervised time.
This course is a promising choice for students who want to test their interest in statistics through practical analysis. Its strongest feature is the connection between research questions, analytical methods, and interpreting results, supported by specialist teaching and instructor feedback.
The value depends on wanting an intensive academic and residential experience. A short introduction cannot replace sustained statistics study, and VSA provides neither academic credit nor an admissions advantage at Vanderbilt. Families should weigh the subject fit alongside the residential commitment and applicable fees.

Connecting unfamiliar statistical methods with what the results actually mean.
Review averages, percentages, and how to read common graphs.
Practice entering data and creating a simple chart in Excel or Google Sheets.
Choose a question from sports, education, or health that you would like data to answer.
Discuss the supervised residential routine and required packing with your family.
Useful if
You want to explore research design and data-driven decisions.
You explore how statistical analysis can answer practical research questions, then work with provided datasets to conduct and interpret your own analyses. Graph-making by hand and with spreadsheet software connects the mathematical ideas to visible patterns.
Explore questions from education, medicine, and sports.
Learn descriptive statistics and foundational statistical inference.
Study correlation, regression, and significance testing.
Conduct analyses using provided datasets and instructions.
Create graphs by hand and with Excel or Google Sheets.
