Save programStudents explore computer science through Java, Python, algorithms, data structures, systems, networking, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The experience emphasizes practical coding exercises, real-world challenges and a collaborative software development project rather than lecture-only study.
Separate beginner and intermediate/advanced weeks make the institute relevant to both first-time coders and students ready for more demanding technical work.
The Coding and Computer Science Institute is part of Wake Forest University's Summer Immersion Program. It introduces high school students to computer science and programming through Java, Python, algorithms, data structures, computer systems, networking and machine learning.
Students learn through workshops, problem-solving exercises, coding projects, case studies and a team software development simulation. Faculty, academics and industry professionals connect the technical work to careers including software engineering, data science and cybersecurity.
The curriculum combines foundational programming languages with algorithms, systems, networking and artificial intelligence.
Students apply concepts through real-world coding challenges and a team software development simulation.
Separate beginner and intermediate/advanced weeks provide clearer entry points for different experience levels.
The academic leader brings Wake Forest teaching experience across programming, software engineering and data science.
Residential campus life adds structured evening activities, peer interaction and round-the-clock staff support.
High school students who want a concentrated, project-led introduction to programming or a more advanced week that extends existing coding experience.
You need academic credit, prefer a non-residential option or want a narrowly specialized course without broader systems and career exploration.
This institute can be worthwhile for students who learn best by building, debugging and collaborating. The mix of Java, Python, algorithms, systems and machine learning offers a broader test of computer science than a single-topic coding camp.
The main limitation is that a one-week experience cannot deliver the depth of a semester course, and it carries no school or college credit. Its value is strongest when students use the projects and career exposure to decide what to study next.
