Save programThis residential institute treats writing as a practical tool for informing, persuading, entertaining and achieving real-world goals.
Students move through brainstorming, drafting, revision and proofreading, supported by participatory workshops and hands-on practice.
It suits motivated student writers who want to improve personal, academic and public-facing communication while experiencing university campus life.
The Writing for Life Institute is a Wake Forest Summer Immersion Program focused on writing that accomplishes a clear purpose. Students examine storytelling, persuasive arguments and writing for public audiences while considering how communication works across academic, personal and professional settings.
The residential seminar combines conversations with people who write or teach writing with workshops and hands-on practice. Students experience the full writing process, from brainstorming and drafting through revision and final proofreading.
The curriculum frames writing as a practical skill that transfers across education, careers and public communication.
Students practice the complete writing process instead of focusing only on finished prose.
Small-group workshops and audience analysis make the experience participatory and feedback-oriented.
Contact with authors, journalists and poets connects classroom practice to real writing careers.
The residential setting combines focused academic work with a supervised university-campus experience.
Students who enjoy writing and want structured practice with storytelling, argument, audience awareness and revision in a residential campus setting.
You need academic credit, prefer a day-only program or want a course devoted exclusively to fiction or poetry.
It can be worthwhile for a student who wants concentrated writing practice, feedback and exposure to professional writers. The combination of workshops, a personal essay and campus life offers more structure than independent writing practice.
The main limitation is value: the program is non-credit and the published tuition is substantial for one week. Families should judge whether the residential experience, instruction and completion certificate justify the cost compared with a lower-cost local workshop or independent project.
