King’s combines the mathematical foundations of AI with machine learning, neural networks and practical applications. Responsible development, bias and computational limitations are part of the academic focus.
Expect active participation, independent study, quizzes and collaborative project work. The course is a stronger fit for students seeking technical understanding than for those mainly interested in trying consumer AI tools.
Foundations of Artificial Intelligence is a King’s College London summer school module exploring the methods and mathematical framework behind AI. It covers machine learning, neural networks, probability theory, game theory and logic programming, connecting these ideas to applications in healthcare, finance, sustainability and transportation.
Students learn through academic teaching, independent study and group work, with quizzes and a group project providing formal assessment. The course also examines bias, fairness and computational limitations, encouraging students to understand both what AI can achieve and how to develop it responsibly.
The curriculum connects AI methods to their mathematical foundations, helping students move beyond surface-level tool use.
Bias, fairness and computational limits are taught alongside applications, giving responsible development a clear academic role.
The assessment combines individual quizzes with substantial group project work.
University-standard assessment and a transcript offer a defined academic outcome, with potential credit transfer.
Students with a quantitative or computing background who want to understand AI methods and practice collaborative academic work.
You need a first introduction to coding or mainly want a relaxed summer experience with little independent study.
This course can be worthwhile if you want a structured bridge between existing programming knowledge and the foundations of AI. Its combination of mathematical ideas, responsible development and assessed group work offers more academic depth than a brief introduction to AI tools.
The main trade-off is the intensive workload and the need to arrive with relevant foundations already in place. Credit transfer could strengthen the value, but it depends on your home institution; judge the course first by its learning content and how it fits your degree.

Best started
Begin preparation six to eight weeks before the session starts, allowing time for documents, travel planning and the pre-arrival mini-module.
Main challenge
Keeping pace with mathematical concepts while contributing effectively to group work.
Refresh Python, basic algorithmics and algebra before undertaking the required asynchronous mini-module.
Gather academic and English-language documents and prepare your personal statement.
Ask your home institution about credit transfer before committing to the course.
Plan accommodation, meal spending and any required UK entry permission.
Useful if
You want to connect existing Python knowledge with AI theory and responsible applications.
You study AI’s mathematical and computational foundations, explore applications and examine responsible development. Quizzes and a collaborative group project turn that learning into assessed academic work.
Complete the asynchronous mini-module before arriving on campus.
Participate in teaching on machine learning, neural networks and the mathematical framework of AI.
Explore applications and discuss bias, fairness and computational limitations.
Undertake independent study and collaborate on the group project.
Complete quizzes and the group project for the final assessment.
