Succeed compares online enrichment courses by their teaching format, subject focus, workload and support, with editorial recommendations based on learning fit.

    • Selection: Succeed prioritizes published programs with distinct subjects or learning formats and counts repeat sessions only once.

    • Checks: Succeed reviews provider identity, eligibility, teaching format, time zones, feedback, assessment and published costs.

    • Official information: Provider pages and FAQs establish program facts, while fit judgments are Succeed's interpretation.

    • Last verified: The displayed date records the latest review of the details, rather than a guarantee of future terms.

    • Changes: Providers may revise course schedules, fees, teaching arrangements and policies between sessions.

    • Succeed's editorial comparisons are independent of the providers featured.

Online enrichment programs are structured courses that extend subject learning beyond a student's regular school curriculum. They can introduce a new field or develop an existing interest through lessons, discussion and assignments. UK providers may describe the same category as secondary-school enrichment or online summer school.

Teaching format affects the experience as much as subject choice. Oxford Scholastica uses live Zoom classes from 1–3 p.m. British Summer Time, with a maximum of 15 students and independent work alongside teaching. Brown offers mostly asynchronous courses with optional live sessions and blended courses with one to three required live sessions weekly.

Compare what you will submit and who will respond to it, rather than choosing by the course title alone. Oxford Scholastica's two-week courses include a project presentation with peer and tutor feedback, while Brown's online Leadership Institute includes an Action Plan and individual instructor meetings. For a mentored investigation centered on a research question, compare the separate online research programs category.

Choose a course by matching its actual teaching and assignments to your interests, starting level and weekly schedule.

    • Compare the syllabus with what you already study and what you want to explore next.

    • Distinguish required live classes, optional meetings and recorded lessons before planning your schedule.

    • Convert live meeting times into your local time zone, accounting for daylight saving changes.

    • Add independent work, orientation and group meetings to the advertised teaching hours.

    • Confirm prerequisites, English requirements and any placement or identification tests.

    • Identify who provides feedback, how you contact them and whether you can revise work.

    • Compare assessed assignments, final projects and completion requirements rather than certificates alone.

Online enrichment can be worthwhile when you want a defined syllabus, teaching support and feedback on work in a subject you enjoy. Its value is clearest when you can identify a specific learning task, such as discussing cases, revising writing or solving unfamiliar problems.

The limitation is that studying online still requires time, motivation and a suitable workspace, even when lessons are flexible. A free course, school club or independent project may be a better choice if you mainly want an introduction and do not need instructor feedback.

How should you compare program cost and value?

Compare the full cost with the teaching time, feedback and assignments you will actually use.

    • Oxford Scholastica's two-week fee includes 20 hours of live teaching and 4 hours of Masterclass sessions.

    • Oxford Scholastica also includes a preparatory reading list, independent study assignments and detailed personalized feedback.

    • Oxford Scholastica includes graduation, a Certificate of Achievement, an Ambassador Programme invitation and ongoing advice; recommendation letters require meeting criteria.

    • Brown includes virtual office hours, daily asynchronous engagement and completion certificates, plus Course Performance Reports for completed courses lasting three weeks or longer.

    • Brown's online courses provide no housing or meals, and required materials, textbooks or supplemental fees can increase the total.

    • Compare scholarship eligibility and the amount you would pay after funding, including any currency conversion charges.

    • Weigh instructor access, feedback and useful assignments against tuition, equipment costs and the weekly study commitment.

Discuss this with a parent or guardian

Agree on the budget, study routine and support arrangements before paying for an online course.

    • Set a total budget covering tuition, required materials, software and any payment or currency conversion charges.

    • Agree when payments are due and read the refund and session-change terms before paying.

    • Convert required live sessions into local time and protect time for sleep, school and other commitments.

    • Arrange a suitable device, reliable internet and a quiet workspace for classes and independent assignments.

    • Clarify staff contact arrangements, online supervision and how a student can request academic or technical help.

    • Confirm what teaching, feedback and completion documents are included, and whether any travel or accommodation is required.

    Online enrichment program FAQs

Live courses require attendance at scheduled meetings, while asynchronous courses let you work through lessons at different times. Blended courses combine both, so flexible coursework does not remove the need to attend required live sessions.

Some providers explicitly welcome international students, but eligibility and English requirements vary. Convert every required meeting into local time; asynchronous lessons can reduce scheduling conflicts, although staff responses may follow the provider's working hours.

Count assignments and preparation alongside lesson time. Oxford Scholastica advises about four hours daily, while Brown describes roughly 15 hours weekly for Summer@Brown Online and 15–20 hours for Leadership Institute Online.

Requirements vary by course, so subject interest alone may not establish readiness. Oxford Scholastica states no academic prerequisites for its online courses, while Johns Hopkins CTY's Advanced Competitive Math requires successful completion of Algebra II and a specified identification level.

Compare the actual assignments and feedback arrangements for each course. Oxford Scholastica's two-week courses include project presentations with tutor and peer feedback, while Georgetown and Rice enrichment courses use Complete or Incomplete assessment and a final capstone project.

A completion certificate and academic credit are different. Brown Pre-College Online and Rice enrichment courses do not award credit; Georgetown distinguishes non-credit enrichment courses from selected credit-bearing courses with transcripts.

Enrichment courses center on a taught syllabus and related assignments, even when they include projects or experiment design. Mentored research centers on investigating a question with research guidance; compare those options in Succeed's separate online research category.

Confirm who operates the course and what relationship the provider explicitly states. Oxford Scholastica Academy says it has no formal connection with the University of Oxford, even though some tutors teach or study there.
