Succeed compares programs by their learning focus, format, provider and family requirements. Provider facts and Succeed's editorial fit judgments serve different purposes.

    • Selection: Succeed includes distinct US-based programs across academic study, research and enrichment, without counting repeated sessions separately.

    • Checks: Succeed reviews provider identity, location, costs and participation rules, distinguishing domestic from international requirements.

    • Official sources: Provider pages and policies support factual details, while fit labels express Succeed's interpretation.

    • Last verified: This marks when a detail was reviewed and does not guarantee that it remains unchanged.

    • Changes: Providers may revise fees, teaching arrangements, participation requirements and travel policies between cycles.

    • Succeed provides independent editorial guidance; inclusion does not imply endorsement by a provider or university.

US summer programs offer school students a period of academic study, research or enrichment at a US location. Options range from broad pre-college study to focused mathematics, science, entrepreneurship and creative subjects. Some combine online work with time in the US, so compare the full format before planning travel.

Start with the subject and type of learning you want, then compare the provider, workload and family arrangements. A university venue alone does not establish who operates a program. UK students should use each provider's international school-stage equivalents and graduation requirements rather than matching US grade labels directly to UK year numbers.

Domestic applicants should confirm citizenship, residency and school-location conditions separately from academic requirements. International applicants should also confirm participation rules, English requirements and appropriate travel documentation. YYGS explicitly accepts applications from all countries, while that policy should not be assumed for other programs.

Compare the learning experience and practical requirements before choosing a location.

    • Choose a subject and learning goal that justify the time commitment.

    • Confirm who operates the program and any explicitly stated university relationship.

    • Match prerequisites, English requirements and expected workload to your current preparation.

    • Domestic applicants should check citizenship, residency and school-location restrictions individually.

    • International applicants should confirm participation eligibility and travel documentation before paying.

    • Compare classes, projects and feedback rather than relying on the program's name.

    • Review accommodation, meals, supervision and support for your chosen format.

    • Distinguish the published cycle from any unconfirmed future arrangements.

A US summer program can be worth pursuing when its subject and learning format match a clear personal goal. Focused study, a venture project or a new academic setting may help you decide what you want to explore further.

The value depends on what you actually do and the support you receive. Fees, travel and time away from other commitments can be substantial, so compare the experience with local study or an independent project before committing.

How should you compare program cost and value?

Compare the complete family budget and confirmed inclusions, rather than the headline fee alone.

    • Add application charges, travel, transfers, insurance and personal spending to the program fee.

    • YYGS tuition includes housing, meals and curriculum materials, but excludes travel.

    • Brown's 2026 on-campus residential fees include meals, housing and access to fitness, athletic and aquatics centers.

    • For Brown's five-week hybrid CRE, residential services cover only the three weeks on campus.

    • Brown's 2026 fees exclude travel, pre/post-program accommodation and required course materials; international students incur an additional $80 insurance charge.

    • Compare funding eligibility separately: YYGS offers domestic and international need-based aid covering up to full tuition.

    • Balance the teaching, feedback and workload against the time, total cost and travel required.

Discuss this with a parent or guardian

Agree on the learning goal and practical arrangements before paying a deposit.

    • Set a total budget that includes fees, transport, insurance and spending money.

    • Confirm deposit amounts, payment timing and any additional application charges.

    • Read refund terms and discuss what happens if travel plans change.

    • Agree on travel arrangements, arrival support and appropriate documentation.

    • Confirm accommodation, meals, supervision and emergency contact arrangements.

    • Discuss workload, independence and any online component before choosing the format.

    • Confirm the package inclusions and any support needs directly with the provider.

    Questions students and parents ask

A US location does not establish eligibility for every domestic applicant. Confirm citizenship, residency, school-location and academic requirements individually, including for programs listed as free.

YYGS accepts applications from all countries and offers domestic and international need-based aid. Summer Springboard also states English requirements for international applicants. These policies should not be assumed to apply to every program.

Program acceptance and immigration permission are separate matters. Brown Pre-College does not offer F-1 or J-1 sponsorship, although students already holding an appropriate visa may apply with their current sponsor's permission. Confirm the requirements for your specific program and circumstances before arranging travel.

Use the provider's stated international equivalents and graduation requirements rather than matching grade numbers directly to UK year groups. YYGS explicitly allows international equivalents for its school-stage requirement and distinguishes Northern and Southern Hemisphere graduation schedules.

The venue alone does not establish the operator or a university relationship. Summer Springboard states that its Berkeley programs are not run by the campus partner. Compare the named provider and its explicit affiliation statement.

The term pre-college does not establish whether credit is awarded. Brown describes Summer@Brown as noncredit, for example. Confirm the exact course's assessment, credit and completion arrangements rather than assuming they follow from its location.

Inclusions vary by provider and package. YYGS includes housing, meals and curriculum materials but excludes travel, while Brown's 2026 fees exclude required course materials and textbooks. Build a total budget from the specific package's inclusions and exclusions.

Choose broad study if you want to compare several interests, and a specialist option if you have a clear subject goal. Then compare the actual tasks, teaching support and workload. A narrower title alone does not establish the depth of the learning experience.
