Get next-cycle reminderESL 20 focuses on everyday English conversation and how Americans communicate, combining classroom practice with interaction beyond the classroom.
Expect active discussions, group presentations, and assignments involving native speakers rather than passive language study.
It suits learners who want to use their existing English more confidently and engage with a university learning environment.
Conversation and Fluency is UCLA's ESL 20 course, offered through Summer Sessions and the Summer ESL program. It concentrates on spoken English, listening in everyday interactions, and the conversational norms that shape American communication.
Students examine conversation rules, contribute to class discussions, and make group presentations. Out-of-class assignments encourage interaction with native speakers and introduce the UCLA campus and local community, giving classroom learning a practical setting.
Native-speaker interaction gives students a practical reason to use English beyond classroom exercises.
Discussion and group presentations make active speaking central to the learning experience.
Small ESL classes and experienced language specialists support close instructor relationships.
UCLA credit provides a formal academic record alongside language practice.
Learners who want to participate more comfortably in everyday English conversations and are willing to speak, collaborate, and interact with unfamiliar people.
You need beginner instruction or a supervised residential camp, or your travel plans would interrupt regular attendance.
This course can be worthwhile when your main goal is to use English more comfortably in real conversations. Discussions, presentations, and native-speaker assignments create several ways to practice, while academic credit gives the work a formal record.
The accelerated pace requires consistent attendance and effort outside class. Families also need to budget for separate fees and living arrangements, and students seeking transferable credit should obtain approval from their home institution before registration.
