Diverse Intelligences connects questions about humans, animals, plants and AI rather than treating intelligence as a single subject.
Students combine lectures, seminars and workshops with independent study and a collaborative research project.
It suits students who enjoy comparing explanations across disciplines and want to practice research, argument and communication.
Diverse Intelligences is a University of St Andrews course exploring intelligence across the natural, social and technological sciences. It asks how human and nonhuman, natural and artificial, individual and collective intelligence can be understood through different disciplines.
The residential experience combines lectures, seminars, workshops, field trips and independent study. Students work with peers and researchers to design and execute a research project, developing academic writing and critical analysis alongside subject knowledge.
The course connects biological and artificial intelligence through shared research questions.
University academic staff teach the lecture content, giving students direct exposure to university-level inquiry.
The collaborative research project turns academic discussion into practical investigation.
Published outcomes emphasize evaluating evidence and communicating scientific ideas.
Three full-fee scholarships combine academic merit with financial need.
Students curious about intelligence across living systems and machines who enjoy discussion, evidence and collaborative research.
You want a narrowly focused coding course or a summer experience centered mainly on leisure.
This course offers a useful way to test whether interdisciplinary research appeals to you. Its strongest feature is the combination of university teaching and a collaborative project, which can help students move beyond simply reading about intelligence.
The substantial residential fee makes academic fit and family budgeting central to the decision. Choose it for the research experience and questions you want to explore; the completion certificate confirms participation and successful completion, without guaranteeing an admissions advantage.
