Get next-cycle reminderWharton Global Youth connects microeconomics with public policy, asking when governments should intervene in markets and what those interventions achieve.
Students use case studies, simulations, and collaborative research to develop policy solutions and present a final policy brief.
The strongest fit is a student who enjoys weighing evidence and competing policy priorities, rather than simply learning financial terminology.
Cambridge, UK: Public Finance and Society is a Wharton Global Youth residential summer program exploring how government taxes, spending, and market interventions affect the economy. It starts with supply and demand, externalities, and public goods, then applies these ideas to policy choices.
Students learn through analytical models, empirical evidence, case studies, and simulations. Small-group work involves comparing policies across countries, designing solutions, and presenting a final policy brief as if advising a presidential candidate.
The curriculum connects economic theory with concrete decisions about taxation, education, health care, and environmental regulation.
A final policy brief gives students a defined task for turning analysis into evidence-based recommendations.
Simulations and group policy design require students to explain trade-offs and respond to other perspectives.
Program leader Rebecca Stein brings Penn economics teaching experience and multiple teaching awards.
Students interested in economics, government, and public policy who enjoy collaborative research and explaining why a policy should work.
You mainly want stock trading or personal investing instruction, or prefer independent study to group discussions and presentations.
This program can be a useful way to test whether you enjoy economics as a tool for understanding public decisions. Its policy brief and simulations give you specific work to reflect on, especially if you want to explore the relationship between business and government.
The residential fee is a substantial commitment, so the academic focus should matter more than the name on the certificate. Treat it as subject exploration and practice in policy reasoning; participation does not guarantee Penn admission.
