Politics of Law and Economics summary

PLE is Yale Young Global Scholars' interdisciplinary track exploring how governments, legal systems, and economic forces shape society.

You attend faculty lectures and seminars, discuss real-world implications with peers, and develop a collaborative Capstone Project with instructional staff.

It suits curious students who enjoy comparing perspectives and connecting current affairs with political, legal, and economic theory.

What is Politics of Law & Economics?

Politics of Law & Economics is an academic track within Yale Young Global Scholars, run through Yale's Office of International Affairs. It connects economic theories, government, and legal frameworks through historical and comparative perspectives, covering public policy, human rights, market regulation, and international cooperation.

The residential experience combines large faculty lectures with smaller seminars, breakout discussions, and a hands-on symposium. Students also collaborate on a mentored Capstone Project, using research and presentation work to explore ideas with peers from different backgrounds.

Why Succeed highlights Politics of Law and Economics

    • The track connects political, legal, and economic explanations of the same social problems.

    • Faculty lectures and small-group discussions give students different ways to question and develop ideas.

    • The mentored Capstone Project turns subject exploration into collaborative research and presentation practice.

    • Learning without grades or course credit encourages exploration rather than grade chasing.

    • Need-based tuition support is available to domestic and international applicants.

Who is Politics of Law and Economics for?

    Best for

Students who want to connect current affairs with theory and enjoy discussing complex questions from several perspectives.

    Not ideal if

You want college credit, a flexible attendance arrangement, or a program centered on one discipline.

Is Politics of Law and Economics worth it?

PLE can be worthwhile if you want to test your interest in the connections between politics, law, and economics. Its strongest educational value comes from discussing ideas with an international peer group and applying research through the Capstone Project.

The residential commitment and family budget deserve careful consideration, especially because travel is separately arranged. There are no grades or course credit, and YYGS is not a feeder program for Yale, so judge it by the learning experience rather than an expected admissions benefit.
