Succeed compares program requirements and learning formats, then adds editorial judgments about fit and workload.

    • Selection: Succeed selects distinct published programs that offer relevant academic or career exploration.

    • Checks: Succeed reviews provider identity, age and grade rules, prerequisites, workload and fee information.

    • Official sources: Provider pages establish requirements, while fit labels express Succeed's interpretation.

    • Last verified: This date records the latest editorial review of details, rather than a provider guarantee.

    • Changes: Providers may revise courses, eligibility, schedules, fees and policies between intakes.

    • Succeed provides independent editorial comparisons; inclusion is not an endorsement or a statement of university affiliation.

A rising junior is a student who has completed grade 10 and will enter grade 11 after the summer. In England and Wales, the comparable transition is usually from Year 11 into Year 12. International applicants should use their actual school year and expected graduation date when interpreting US grade requirements.

These programs range from broad subject exploration to focused mathematics, social sciences and career study. Compare the work students actually do, the teaching format and the time required outside class. A familiar university name or campus location does not establish who operates a program.

Calculate your age and record your grade at the chosen program's start, then apply any separate provider cutoff. Summer@Brown's 2026 rules covered students completing grades 9-12, ages 14-18 by 14 June 2026. YYGS requires current sophomores or juniors, or international equivalents, and ages 16-18 by 18 July 2027 for its 2027 intake. These rules show why grade progression and birthday eligibility need separate checks.

Start with eligibility, then compare the learning experience against your interests and existing commitments.

    • Verify your grade and age at the start, including any separate birthday cutoff.

    • Confirm course prerequisites, required school subjects and English proficiency rules before preparing an application.

    • Choose broad exploration or focused study according to how certain you are about the subject.

    • Count class time, independent study, required activities and travel in your weekly workload.

    • Distinguish non-credit enrichment from assessed courses that create an academic record.

    • Identify the operator and confirm any university affiliation the provider explicitly states.

    • Check housing eligibility separately from academic eligibility, especially when traveling without family.

A summer program can be worthwhile when you want structured time to test an interest before choosing more advanced school subjects. Teaching, discussion and independent work can help you judge whether you enjoy studying a field beyond its school syllabus.

The commitment can be substantial: Summer@Brown describes three hours of class plus two to three hours of independent work each weekday. Compare that workload and the full family cost with local classes, personal projects or paid work. Choose a program for the learning experience you want.

How should you compare program cost and value?

Compare equivalent durations and formats, then calculate the full amount your family would pay.

    • Summer@Brown charges per course, so taking several courses adds separate course fees.

    • Brown's residential fees include meals, housing and fitness, athletic and aquatics center access during the campus portion.

    • Brown's commuter fees include one campus meal daily and facility access, but exclude housing.

    • Brown excludes travel, pre-program and post-program accommodation, required textbooks and course materials from its fees.

    • Summer@Brown includes a completion certificate; courses lasting at least two weeks also provide a Course Performance Report.

    • Confirm scholarship or bursary eligibility and the awarded amount before subtracting funding from your budget.

    • Judge teaching time, independent work and included support against the total cost, travel and summer time required.

Discuss this with a parent or guardian

Agree on the learning goal, practical arrangements and financial commitment before paying a deposit.

    • Set a total budget covering fees, travel, accommodation, meals, insurance and personal spending.

    • Record payment timing, nonrefundable charges and cancellation terms for both the program and housing.

    • Confirm accommodation eligibility, supervision, curfews and emergency contact arrangements.

    • Plan travel documents, arrival transfers and who will help if travel is disrupted.

    • Agree whether online, commuting or living away best matches the student's independence and support needs.

    • Confirm fee inclusions and leave enough time for homework, existing commitments and rest.

    Questions students and families ask

A rising junior has completed grade 10 and will enter grade 11 after the summer. For students in England and Wales, this usually corresponds to finishing Year 11 before starting Year 12.

No; grade requirements, graduation year, birthday cutoffs and course prerequisites may apply separately. Calculate your age at the program start and at any other date specified by the provider, and confirm housing eligibility independently.

Summer@Brown describes three hours of class each weekday plus two to three hours of independent or group work daily. Other programs may use different schedules, so compare total study time rather than class hours alone.

Brown Pre-College requires academic records and a 250-500-word essay, while recommendations are generally optional for Summer@Brown. Course prerequisites and English proficiency requirements are separate checks, so prepare for the specific program and course you choose.

YYGS accepts applications from all countries and requires the ability to participate in rigorous academic study in English. International eligibility varies by provider, and permission to attend a program is separate from permission to travel.

For its 2027 intake, YYGS requires Northern Hemisphere graduation in May or June 2028 or 2029, or Southern Hemisphere graduation in November or December 2027 or 2028. Applicants must also meet its current sophomore or junior equivalent, age, English fluency and first-time participation requirements.

Online study removes commuting or campus travel, but the timetable and independent work still matter. Convert scheduled sessions into your local time zone and count homework before combining a program with a job, sports or another course.

A broad program is useful when you are still comparing interests, while a specialist option concentrates your time on one field. Compare the actual course level and prerequisites with what you have studied, rather than choosing by the program name alone.
